Matthew Henson (1866–1955) was an African American explorer and among the first group of people to reach the North Pole on April 6, 1909. He accompanied the widely celebrated explorer Robert Peary on seven expeditions to the Arctic over the course of two decades, though his contributions to Peary’s expeditions were not recognized at the time. Regarding who reached the North Pole first during their 1909 mission, Henson is quoted in a newspaper saying, ”I was in the lead that had overshot the mark by a couple of miles. We went back then and I could see that my footprints were first at the spot.”
